The Secret MESSENGER

The name Secret Messenger draws inspiration from a medieval silver seal (c. AD 1200–1400) found near the site of the Temple’s construction. The seal, which features a reused Roman intaglio (c. second or third century AD), is engraved with a winged Victory (Nike) saluting a seated winged Messenger (Mercury). The silver matrix surrounding the Roman stone bears the Latin legend Secreti Nuncia (“Secret Messenger”), suggesting that whoever made the seal understood the lost meaning of the intaglio.

MAterials

Most of the materials for the exterior are reclaimed to create an authentic historic look. The height and proportions of the reclaimed pillars, the amount of cornice available, and the sizes of the fantastic double doors have in turn informed the height and ratios of the portico. It has been an interesting design process to ensure that the structure is both functional and beautiful, whilst using the materials on hand.
